Caledonia State Park - Fayetteville
Explore Caledonia, Pennsylvania's second oldest state park, all weekend, with special activities happening on Saturday (8/31) and Sunday (9/1) (10am to 3pm both days):
  • Horse and wagon tours of the park's historic and natural sites
  • Blacksmith Shop demonstrations (10am-3pm)
  • Thaddeus Stevens Society offering historical interpretation
  • The Pennsylvania Forest Heritage and Discovery Center will be open for self-guided tours of the museum


Dickinson College Farm - Boiling Springs
Enjoy a one-hour guided tour of the USDA-certified organic 50-acre Dickinson College farm, Saturday 8/31 at 10am. Learn about the farm's vegetable production, animal pasturage, and sustainable energy technologies. Limited to 50 participants; pre-registration required at: http://smo2013.brownpapertickets.com/

3rd Annual Sticky Buns Appalachian Trail Hike - Boiling Springs
Join the Cumberland Valley Appalachian Trail Club on Saturday morning (8/31) for an easy three-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail! It gets better - celebrate your morning hike afterwards with free world-famous Sticky Buns from the Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse! Hike departs from the Fisherman's Parking Lot at the south end of Children's Lake Saturday (8/31) at 9 am.

Help Pine Grove celebrate its 100th Anniversary as a State Park with special South Mountain Outdoors activities throughout the Labor Day Weekend!
  • Campfire Program: Black Bears in Pennsylvania! Friday evening (8/30) 8pm at the campground amphitheater!
  • Introduction to Kayaking! three instructor-led sessions at Fuller Lake on Saturday (8/31) morning (9am, 11am, and 1pm) - call 717-486-7174 to register!
  • Traditional Folk Music Concert - Sunday (9/1) at 2pm, hosted by the Appalachian Trail Museum!
  • Iron Master's Mansion will be open for self-guided tours throughout the weekend!

Dill's Tavern - Dillsburg
Come explore the Dill's Tavern and Plantation, now an interpretive and educational center that takes visitors back to the early 19th Century! Free tours all day both Saturday (8/31) and Sunday (9/1) of the tavern and its grounds - including the Wheelwright shop, where craftspeople will be demonstrating traditional craftsmanship such as woodworking and blacksmithing! 
Gettysburg Wine and Fruit Trail - South Mountain region
The Gettysburg Wine and Fruit Trail have put together 5 amazing bus tours to feature their partners. Tours are available on both Saturday and Sunday:
  • Family Fun Tour – features Paulus Orchards, Field of Adventure, Boyer’s Orchard & Nursery, Historic Round Barn, Hollabaugh Brothers Market

Visit Strawberry Hill for a special free workshop geared toward private landowners interested in forest stewardship.  The Seminar will use the Nature Preserve as a case study to understand and interpret forest health, manage timber harvests, and consider wildlife and invasive species concerns. Saturday (8/31) from 1pm-4pm.

Renfrew is a restored German farmstead that takes visitors into the agriculture, industry, and domestic life of a Pennsylvania German farming family of 200 years ago! Visit the Museum and Park for special free tours of the buildings and grounds. Saturday (8/31) and Sunday (9/1), noon to 4pm!

Did you know that Mont Alto is the oldest forestry school in Pennsylvania, and one of the oldest in the country? Visit the campus on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm for guided tours (starting every half-hour) of the school arboretum (containing several PA Champion trees). At 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday, join Mont Alto forestry faculty for a guided 1.5 mile hike to the Meeting of the Pines Natural Area!
