3rd Annual South Mountain Outdoors - Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend 2013: August 31 and September 1

Get ready to enjoy the natural and scenic beauty of the South Mountain landscape with a line-up of events and activities that highlight the amazing recreational resources, storied cultural destinations, and thriving place-based businesses of south-central Pennsylvania!


What: South Mountain Outdoors! A series of outdoor activities, recreational events, educational opportunities, and fun for the whole family celebrating the resources of the South Mountain landscape!

When: Labor Day Weekend: Saturday, August 31st, and Sunday, September 1st, 2013

Where: various destinations across Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, and York counties

Who: hosted by the South Mountain Partnership, supported by the participating locations - but most importantly, attended by you!

Host Locations of the 2013 South Mountain Outdoors

Caledonia State Park:

Horse and wagon tours of the park, blacksmith demonstrations at the Caledonia Ironworks, the Forest History and Discovery Center, and Thaddeus Stevens Society talks. (All activities on both Saturday and Sunday)

Dickinson College Farm:

Hour-long tour of the organic farm and its vegetable production, animal pasture acreage, and sustainable energy technologies. (Saturday morning)

Kings Gap Environmental Education Center:

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club and the Friends of Kings Gap host the 3rd Annual Kings Gap Time Trial (Saturday).
Kings Gap Mansion open for tours and a special evening of the "Music on the Mountain" featuring Celtic music, song and dance (Sunday).

Pine Grove Furnace State Park:

A special Friday (8/30) evening event: a campfire program on black bears in Pennsylvania.
Staffed "Introduction to Kayaking" sessions at Fuller Lake (Saturday).
The Appalachian Trail Museum and the Iron Master's Mansion will be open for tours over the weekend.
An afternoon traditional folk concert hosted by the Appalachian Trail Museum (Sunday).

Dill's Tavern:

Tavern and its surrounding plantation open for tours throughout the weekend; traditional craftsmanship (woodworking, blacksmithing, and others) demonstrations on both days.

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve:

Forest stewardship seminar focused on sustainably managing backyard forests: interpreting forest health, managing invasive species, managing deer, conducting timber harvests, and other topics (Saturday).

Gettysburg Wine and Fruit Trail:

Special events and deals over the weekend along the South Mountain region's only wine, beer, fruit, food and farm agri-tourism trail: fifteen farm and beverage partners, six dining establishments, and eight inn and bed and breakfast destinations.

Penn State - Mont Alto:

Forestry faculty and students offer guided tours of the arboretum on the campus of the oldest forestry school in the state, and a guided tour to the Meeting of the Pines Natural Area (Saturday and Sunday).

Renfrew Museum:

Guided tours of the restored German farmstead - its buildings and grounds - to illustrative the agricultural, industrial, and domestic life of a Pennsylvania farming family of 200 years ago (Saturday and Sunday).
